We are a nation of martyrdom; Mukhtar's uprising and issues surrounding it

Mukhtar's uprising: A historical, theological, and social perspective
The uprising of Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubaydah al-Thaqafi was a political-religious movement that began with the aim of avenging Imam Hussein (a.s.) and his companions and establishing a Shiite government. This uprising, also known as "Yawm al-Sabi'a", was formed with the intention of taking revenge on the murderers of the martyrs of Karbala and turned Mukhtar into one of the remarkable figures in Islamic history.
Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd al-Thaqafi (1-67 AH) was one of the Tabi'in who rose up to avenge the blood of Imam Hussein (a.s.). There are different views about his personality and performance, and numerous works have been written in criticism and analysis of this uprising. Some believe that Mukhtar launched the uprising with divine motivation and with the permission of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a.s.), but others consider him simply a power-hungry individual who sought to gain power. There is a third view that considers Mukhtar a Shiite but does not approve of his actions, although he does not consider him a person of Hell. This diversity of views is rooted in two categories of narrations: some praising Mukhtar, and some criticizing him. Rijalians such as Abdullah Mamaqani and Ayatollah Khuyi have preferred the praising narrations to the criticizing narrations.
Saad ibn Masoud Thaqafi, Mukhtar's uncle, was the governor of Mada'in during the time of Imam Ali (a). He appointed Mukhtar as his successor in Mada'in in order to confront the Kharijites. However, there is a report according to which, during the presence of Imam Hassan (a) in Mada'in, Mukhtar suggested to his uncle that he hand over the Imam to Muawiyah. Ayatollah Khuyi considers this narration unreliable because it is a Mursal and, even if it is true, he considers it merely a curiosity to understand his uncle's opinion, not a serious proposal.
Mukhtar did not participate in the Tawabin uprising; Because he considered this uprising fruitless and considered Sulayman ibn Sard al-Khuza'i to be unfamiliar with the techniques of war. Due to his absence, 4,000 of the 16,000 people who had pledged allegiance to Sulayman did not show up for the war. Mukhtar was imprisoned at the same time, and after the defeat of the Taw'abi uprising, he wrote a letter to them to appease the survivors. Although the Taw'abi leaders intended to release him, they gave up after Mukhtar's warning. Finally, he was released from prison with the mediation of Abdullah ibn Umar. It is stated in the sources that a group of Kufa leaders went to Imam Sajjad (a.s.) and asked about Mukhtar's mission. The Imam referred them to Muhammad ibn Hanafiyyah and said: "O uncle, if a slave of yours shows prejudice against us, the Ahl al-Bayt, it is obligatory on the people to help him. Do whatever you want, I will make you a representative in this matter." Ayatollah Khoei and Mamaqani, based on this narration, have considered Mukhtar's uprising to be legitimate and with the permission of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a).
Baqir Sharif Qureshi believes that Mukhtar's uprising was not carried out for ambition but for the blood of the Prophet's family (pbuh). Najm al-Din Tabasi also considers Imam Baqir's (a) request for mercy for Mukhtar as a sign of approval of his actions. Ibn Nama Hilli also considered Imam Sajjad's (a) prayers for Mukhtar as evidence of his purity and righteousness.
In contrast to these positive narrations, some Sunnis have included the name Mukhtar among liars and Khawarij. However, in analyzing this claim, they have said that the name Mukhtar did not exist in the aforementioned narration at all and was added by the narrator. Hajjaj ibn Yusuf used to order people to curse Imam Ali (a) and Mukhtar, and Maqrizi also considered Mukhtar among the Khawarij.
In Shiite literature, a work titled Rawdat al-Mujahideen, written by the preacher Haravi in the 10th century AH, epically recounts the battles and bravery of Mukhtar. This book, which was read on pulpits during the month of Muharram, was published by Qoqnos Publications in 520 pages.

Mukhtar’s uprising has features that distinguish it from other movements. The nature of allegiance, both in the pre-Islamic era and after the migration, was within a specific framework. In the pre-Islamic era, allegiance was mainly to confront tribal dangers such as threats from enemies, and goals such as reclaiming pastures, freeing captives, or avenging the blood of individuals were raised. After the migration, allegiance was more of a symbolic act to confirm the prophethood of the Prophet (PBUH) and acted in line with previous traditions.
In the Quranic teachings and the Prophetic tradition, Wilayat had a special place. Although the caliphate was limited to executive functions throughout Islamic history and ignored religious positions, the concept of “Waliy Allah” remained intact in Shiite beliefs. For this reason, Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (a.s.) stated in a sermon that he would have abandoned the caliphate if not for the sake of religious responsibility and the existence of companions. The Imam emphasized that everything should be for God, even love for Hussein (a.s.).
In such an atmosphere, Mukhtar’s program was not only focused on taking revenge on the direct killers; he also included those who were involved in the martyrdom of Imam Hussein’s (a.s.) companions in the list of punishments.
It should be noted that along with Mukhtar, Ibrahim ibn Malik al-Ashtar, Yazid ibn Anas, and Abdullah Kamil also participated in this uprising, knowing that this uprising should be based entirely on the principles and branches of religion. They also had approval for their uprising from Imam Sajjad (a.s.).
On the other hand, Hazrat Sakina (PBUH) also tried to keep the Karbala movement alive by utilizing the capacity of the poets of that time. Her house had become a cultural center where prominent poets such as Qamiyat, Taubah, and Farazdaq composed poems in praise of the Ahlul Bayt. Laila Akhiliyyah, a famous female poet of that time, was one of the pillars of this cultural activity.
If Mukhtar's uprising lacked legitimacy, why was the Imam arrested and martyred?
The second pillar of reconciliation in the Mukhtar movement was the cooperation of Ibrahim ibn Malik al-Ashtar with the Zubayrians, which was in line with the general policy of the uprising and undoubtedly took place at the behest of the Imam. Some Shiites, unable to understand this issue, turned to other statements.
After Mukhtar's martyrdom, religious The name Kaysaniyah was formed. This name is derived from the words of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) who said to Mukhtar in his childhood: “Kays, Kays” (smart, smart). However, the founders of this sect misused the words of the Imams for their own purposes. They even used the Imams’ (a.s.) affirmations about Mukhtar to serve their own purposes. The pure Imams (a.s.) have fully and comprehensively affirmed Mukhtar; an affirmation that I believe they have not affirmed for anyone else on these matters. Although some companions have said something about Mukhtar’s knowledge and wisdom that is above the scientific level, such as what Imam Sadiq (a.s.) has said about Aban ibn Taghlib.
